What happened?

On the morning of 3 September in the United States, OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Codex, Anthropic’s Claude, and xAI’s Grok all experienced service problems. Status pages and news reports recorded user errors and degraded service. Google’s Gemini also drew user reports, but Google had not issued a comparable confirmed outage notice at the time.

It is important not to flatten these into one identical, shared outage. xAI’s Grok status page records an incident from 13:30 to 17:07 UTC, lasting 3 hours and 37 minutes. OpenAI recorded elevated errors for ChatGPT and Codex, with different affected components and a different recovery timeline. Anthropic also reported impact to parts of its service. Public information has not confirmed a single root cause across all three providers.

Why does this matter to ordinary users?

For someone using AI as a chat tool, an outage is an inconvenience. For people using it to write code, handle support, process documents, or support internal workflows, it can stop work immediately. If a team has built automation around one model provider without a human fallback or alternative path, a service disruption can quickly become a business delay.

The event also shows that AI services are not isolated. Model providers, cloud services, identity systems, networks, and internal enterprise software form a supply chain. Even when products fail at the same time, it is not responsible to claim a shared infrastructure failure or common cause without evidence.

How should businesses prepare?

First, build a degraded mode for critical processes: when AI is unavailable, can a user reach a person, use a cached result, or defer the task safely? Second, distinguish retryable work from work that must complete immediately; the latter should not depend on a single model provider. Third, retain model-call logs and business-impact metrics, so teams can see not only technical errors but also effects on customers, orders, and security.

Reliability is not about finding a provider that never fails. It is about designing a workflow that can still function when a provider occasionally does.
